Bookmatch
A bookmatch is a pair of neighbouring boards opened like a book to create a mirrored grain pattern.
What it means#
Bookmatching uses two adjacent boards from a log. One board is flipped so the growth rings and figure mirror each other across the joint.
Why buyers care#
The result can be dramatic, especially in walnut and figured hardwoods. The practical value depends on more than the mirror: thickness, moisture, checks, colour balance, and flattening allowance all need to line up.
What to check#
Look at the centre joint, but also look at the outer live edges, defect placement, and whether the pair can finish to the same final thickness.
