Defect

A defect is a condition that can reduce a piece’s value, strength or suitability for a job.

Examples include decay, active insect damage, severe splits and unwanted warp. Natural variation becomes a defect only when it conflicts with the stated use or sale description.

Use the defect map and photos to plan cuts and repairs. A disclosed defect can still be workable material.

Decay is wood breakdown caused by fungi under suitable moisture conditions.

Insect or fungal activity

This label records signs of wood-boring insects or fungi and whether activity may still be present.
