Finishing
Planed wood has been passed through a planer or worked with a plane to create a smoother, truer surface.
The result may be sold as surfaced on one or more faces. It is usually closer to final size than rough-sawn stock.
Planed does not mean sanded or coated. Tool marks and final preparation may still be required.

A wood finish is a surface treatment such as oil, wax, lacquer or varnish.
A finished surface has received its final sanding and intended protective treatment.
Rough-sawn wood retains the surface left by the saw and has not been planed smooth.
Flattening removes high areas until one broad face lies in a plane, then brings the other face parallel.
