A knot is the base of a branch enclosed in the trunk wood.
Sound knots can be firm and decorative. Loose, dead or cracked knots may fall out or weaken a critical area.
Judge each knot by condition and placement. A knot near a cut line or joint matters differently from one in an open decorative field.
