What it means#
Figure is the optical pattern seen when fibres deviate from straight grain. Curl, quilt and fiddleback are common names for repeated light and dark bands.
Why buyers care#
Strong figure can change sharply as the viewing angle changes. This chatoyance is part of the appeal, but a single photo can either hide it or make it look stronger than it will in a room.
What to check#
Look for photos taken from more than one angle and under plain light. Compare figure with the outline, defects, and planned cuts, because the best pattern may not fall where the finished part needs it.
