Flattening

Flattening removes high areas until one broad face lies in a plane, then brings the other face parallel.

A router sled, planer or wide-belt machine may be used depending on size. The amount removed depends on cup, bow and twist.

Ask for the expected finished thickness before ordering the service. Flattening does not automatically include fine sanding.

Rough-sawn

Rough-sawn wood retains the surface left by the saw and has not been planed smooth.

Planing

Planing cuts a thin layer from wood to make a face or edge smoother and more accurate.
