Finishing
Food-safe finish
A food-safe finish is a cured coating or oil system suitable for contact with food under its stated use conditions.
What it means#
Food-safe usually refers to the finished surface after the finish has fully cured, not to the wet product in the tin. In the EU, food-contact claims should match the maker’s stated use.
Why buyers care#
Many wood finishes are suitable for incidental food contact once cured, but drying and curing are different. A surface that feels dry may still be releasing solvent or reacting.
What to check#
Check the manufacturer’s food-contact statement, cure time, and cleaning limits. For chopping boards, serving boards, or bar tops, match the finish to knife use, alcohol, heat, acids, and repeated washing. Do not rely on smell alone to judge cure.
