Defects and features
Decay is wood breakdown caused by fungi under suitable moisture conditions.
Affected wood may be soft, crumbly, discoloured or lighter than sound timber. Drying can stop growth without restoring lost strength.
Probe suspect areas and check how far they extend. Surface staining alone is not proof of structural decay.
