Defects and features
A split is a substantial separation that passes deeply through a board or reaches more than one surface.
Splits often begin at an end or near the pith as drying stress is released. They can continue beyond the obvious opening.
Allow extra length for trimming and inspect the opposite face. Repairs must suit the load and final use.
