Crotch figure

Crotch figure is a feather or flame pattern formed where a trunk divides into large branches.

What it means#

Crotch figure forms at a fork in the tree, where grain from the trunk and branches compresses and crosses. The result is often a feather, flame, or fan shape.

Why buyers care#

The pattern can make a strong table centre or cabinet panel. The grain is dense and interlocked, so it can move unpredictably, tear during machining, and check while drying.

What to check#

Look for end checks, pith, bark pockets, and any cracks running through the fork. Confirm moisture and thickness. Plan cuts so the feature sits where it can be supported, flattened, and finished without losing its shape.
