Janka hardness
Janka is a hardness rating that helps compare dent resistance between wood species.
What it means#
The Janka test measures the force needed to embed a steel ball halfway into wood. It is useful for comparing relative dent resistance, not for predicting every real-world failure.
Why buyers care#
Higher Janka values usually mean better dent resistance for tables, counters, stair parts, and flooring. Lower values can still be excellent for shelves, wall pieces, or furniture where warmth and workability matter more.
What to check#
Use Janka alongside density, grain, finish choice, and the real use case. A hard species with a delicate finish can still mark in daily use.
