Waney edge
A waney edge is the natural outer edge of a board, often called live edge and listed as Baumkante in German.
What it means#
Waney edge is the British term for a board that keeps part of the tree’s natural outside edge. In many listings it means the same as live edge. German sellers often use Baumkante.
Why buyers care#
The edge gives the slab its original outline, but it may include bark, cambium, insect tracks, soft sapwood, or missing sections. The usable width is therefore smaller than the widest measured point.
What to check#
Compare maximum width with the minimum width along the outline. Check whether bark is present, loose, or removed. For paired boards, check that the two waney edges leave enough space for legs, aprons, or a resin channel.
