Do I need a licence to use the Baofeng UV-5RM?

Transmitting on amateur (ham) VHF/UHF frequencies requires an amateur radio licence in most countries, including across the EU. Receiving is generally unrestricted. Check your national regulator's rules before transmitting; the radio is sold for lawful use only.

How is the UV-5RM different from the older UV-5R?

The UV-5RM builds on the UV-5R platform with a larger 1.77-inch colour display, USB-C charging, a higher-capacity 2500 mAh battery, more memory channels, and wider multi-band receive including the FM broadcast band and NOAA weather channels.

Can I programme it from a computer?

Yes. The UV-5RM works with the free CHIRP software and Baofeng's own programming tools. You will need a compatible USB programming cable, sold separately, to read and write channels from a computer.

What antenna does it use, and can I upgrade it?

The radio uses a standard SMA-female connector and ships with a basic dual-band antenna. You can swap in common upgrade antennas, such as the Nagoya NA-771, for better range on VHF and UHF without any modification.

What is included in the box?

Each radio ships with a rechargeable 2500 mAh Li-ion battery, a standard antenna, a belt clip, a wrist strap, a USB-C charging cable, and a user manual.

The Baofeng UV-5RM is a compact, rugged handheld two-way radio: a no-subscription way to keep a crew in contact across a yard, a worksite, or open country where mobile coverage runs thin. It builds on the long-running UV-5R platform with a brighter 1.77-inch colour display, USB-C charging, and a larger 2500 mAh battery for longer days between charges.

It transmits on the VHF, UHF and 1.25 m (220 MHz) amateur bands and offers wide-band receive, including the FM broadcast band and NOAA weather channels. With 999 memory channels, CTCSS/DCS tone squelch, dual-watch and a built-in LED flashlight, it is quick to set up and easy to live with. The SMA-female connector takes standard upgrade antennas, and the radio is fully programmable through the free CHIRP software with a compatible cable.
